New coach in the house


At 12 Rounds our focus on real boxing technique is something we are very proud of.  Teaching our members skills by nailing the basics from the ground up is a big part of our ethos.  To learn to box properly is an art form, you must get your balance, footwork and hands all working together to throw basic combinations before you can progress.

We also believe that the best people to teach you are those who’ve walked the walk themselves.  Our trainers are all competitive boxers and Thai boxers and we are very pleased to welcome new coach Scott Smart to the team.  Scott comes with vast boxing knowledge and experience with over 50 amateur fights in the bag.

We’ve done a little Q&A so you get some cool info on the newest member of the 12 Rounds family:

Name:Scott Smart

Amateur Bouts:55.  Wins – 39, Losses – 16

Previous Club:  Islington ABC

Favourite bout– Scott’s favourite bout was away in South Africa. He and his team travelled to South Africa in 2013 to box against the Johannesburg boxing team. They were there for 10 days for a training camp and at the end of the camp they had a tournament against the Johannesburg team. Not only did Scott win his bout, but he also won the boxer of the tournament award!

Toughest bout –Scott was a guest boxer at a show against a travelling team from Denmark. The bout ended with a split decision loss, however the loss wasn’t the toughest part to take. The boxer Scott faced was extremely aggressive, constantly coming forward with little let off. By the time Scott had worked out how to box against him, it was too late.  If only he had had another round to go…

Favourite punch –Lead upper cut.  “It’s a really nice punch to land”.

Favourite boxer –Pernell Whitaker.  Scott describes him as the “perfect southpaw”.

What are you excited to bring to 12 rounds – Scott’s excited to show his perspective on boxing.  He is looking forward to teaching his style, whilst working with the 12 rounds members to develop their skills.

What excites you most about joining the team?  Making new friends and enjoying what we do!!

Covid safety measures at 12 Rounds

12 Rounds Re-Opening Guide 

At 12 Rounds we have made your safety our top priority and want to ensure you feel safe and comfortable at all times during your fitness experience. Here’s a bit about our new health and safety protocol and what to expect when you come to the gym:

Safety 
Things will be a bit different when you arrive at the gym.  You will need to arrive gym ready and arrive 10 mins early.  We will not be able to admit late for classes.  There will be a one way system clearly marked as you enter the gym.  You will come to reception to check in and have temperature checked before you can be admitted to class.  In order to comply with the governments track and trace system you will to ensure that your profile and contact details on Team Up are up to date before we can admit you.

Hygiene 
Hand sanitising stations will be available throughout the gym for you to use.  Class times have also been staggered to allow bags and any equipment to be wiped down after each classes.  There will be no sharing of bags or equipment or gloves.  You will need to bring your own gloves, we have some available to purchase at reduced price if you need them.
You will also be expected to adhere to social distancing so I’m afraid no hugging each other for now.  Social distance, waiting points and one way entrance/exit will be clearly marked out.

Reduced class sizes 
Class sizes will be reduced, which means no hiding at the back, after 4 months off for some of you, the team will be making sure you all get your work in.

We know it’s all a bit strange just now but we believe that if we all adhere to the rules we will finally ‘knockout ‘ this bug and we will be back to full on punching in no time.

We can’t wait to see you all soon and get back to boxing.

Create Opportunities

Something we learn in boxing is about creating opportunities to land our shots.  Sometimes that means using our footwork to get into a better position or faking to draw our opponent in and set them up for that big shot 

We can look at the current situation in the same way.  Where are the opportunities? How can you use this time to your advantage? 

A lot of us may be faced with the prospect of losing our jobs in the current situation which of course is incredibly scary.  The brain loves predictability and routine so its normal to experience anxiety over all this change. Taking small actions to explore other possibilities is one way to help settle the brain.

At 12 Rounds we’re taking this opportunity to upgrade our gym.  We are very blessed to have a fantastic space that allows us to comply with social distancing so we are looking at ways we can use it better. 

So where are the opportunities for you? Could this be the time for a career change? Or maybe it’s a time to create the balance in your life you’ve always wanted? Corona virus has made most of us re-evaluate what’s important to us and become more budget conscious so maybe you don’t need the same salary you thought you once did? 

It all starts with the exploration on what makes you happy and what you really want.  What are your strengths and weaknesses? Most of us don’t really know that much about ourselves as we’ve never taken the time to do the work.   The best project you’ll ever work on is you.  Maybe nows the time to create your masterpiece 😉

What is the best workout for me?

Ever have that over whelming feeling of not knowing what class to do? What way to train? Doing everything possible then doing nothing? .
.
.
We feel ya!! Especially in this time when there are more free classes than you’ve had hot dinners and everyone’s saying that they will come out of quarantine shredded blah blah… let’s remember this isn’t a weight loss competition or the cross fit games!!

.To start with do something you enjoy.  Why would you chose to start running if running is something you hate?  Be nice to yourself during this crazy time.

We know that the best workout is always the one you actually do CONSISTENTLY.  So instead of thinking which workout will burn more calories, think about which workout will keep you interested enough that you want to keep doing it.

Once you’ve decided what to do.  Find a trainer that inspires you.  There are literally thousands to choose from online, find one or several that you want to tune into regularly.

At 12 Rounds we like adding a bit of fun and humour to our sessions to keep you entertained as you workout :)

So our No 1 training tip is CONSISTENCY IS KEY! With that you need to:

1. Pick you goal- make it achievable and have more than 1.  Think about how you are going to know when you reach your goal eg your clothes fit better, you have more energy, you can complete that run in a certain amount of time, you can finally do a set of press ups….Be SPECIFIC and be clear on how you will MEASURE you’re on the right track. 

2. Work out a way to reach that goal. Plan the sessions you’re going to do. Make a training diary.   Don’t overdo it though and plan rest days too.  Rest is just as important as the actual workouts, this is when the body changes and adapts. 

3. It’s a marathon not a sprint. If you don’t see results in a week that’s normal, have 4-6 week blocks and go from there.  Go back to your goals and do a check in.  If you are not on the right track after 4-6 weeks then look at what you can change.  More often than not it’s diet related as most of us find this the hardest bit to stick to, but that’s a whole other blog……

10 tips to stay healthy over lockdown

Being cooped up inside for weeks on end is enough to drive anyone to a tray of chocolate brownies washed down with a bottle of wine.  With many of us off work with no routine or schedule it’s very easy to sleep till noon and console yourself with food, booze and Netflix. 

At 12 Rounds we don’t just teach boxing skills we help our members to stay fit and healthy both mentally and physically.  Promoting positive mental well being is something we are known for.  We know that movement and connection are 2 things that keep us mentally well.  For anyone who suffers from stress and anxiety, movement is key to interrupting those negative thoughts patterns.  Boxing is particularly helpful as it involves putting complex patterns together so the brain is basically given a break from whatever it is that’s causing the stress.  Let’s face it who hasn’t experienced some level of anxiety during these current times? 

We also believe that having support and feeling connected make the brain feel safe and alleviate any stress.

If you’ve been struggling to stay sane these last few weeks and feel like you’re slipping into bad habits, here’s a few tips to take on these next few weeks like a champion fighter. 

Routinefind a routine that works for you and stick to it.  Maybe you’re off work just now and don’t have to set the alarm for 6.30am.  It’s still important to have a regular time to get up and get moving, otherwise it’s too easy to become lethargic and start to see negative effects on your mental health.  Set up a routine that works for you.  It could be getting out for a walk first thing or joining an online workout to get the endorphins flowing and start the day on a positive note.

Move oftenwe all know we need to move for both mental and physical health.  Exercise doesn’t have to mean traditional gym workouts.  Do something you enjoy rather than punishing yourself. Get out walking, cycling or just put your fav music on and dance around your kitchen.  Boxing enthusiasts practice your shadow boxing in front on the mirror.  With all the free online sessions at the moment, there’s never been a better time to try something new.

 Experiment in the kitchen and try new foods and ways of cooking.  Try adding colour and spice to your meals for nutrient density.  What you want to avoid is the ‘table of beige” Beige food screams processed.  Cakes, biscuits, bread, pastries will all give you a sugar hit and leave you feeling rubbish and piling on the pounds.  I’m not saying don’t have any but just make sure you’ve got a balance of colour on your table. 

Get some sunlight.  Vitamin D is essential for not just our bones but overall health.  We absorb vitamin D from sunlight via our skin so try and get at least 20 mins a day outdoors without sunblock.  If you struggle to get enough sun time, you can take as a supplement too.

 Stay connectedtoo much alone time can be too much time in our heads for some of us.  To combat this schedule regular video calls with family and friends.  There are also a lot of online support groups that offer regular virtual meet ups. If you are someone who is shy and struggles with meeting new people, challenge yourself to move out of your comfort zone and make contact with old friends.  You may just find that you rekindle lapsed relationships through this difficult time.

Limit your sugar intakealthough it may be comforting to reach for the chocolate right now but too much sugar has a direct effect on your mood.  With so much uncertainty we want to remain as upbeat as possible right? I’m not saying don’t have treats, just be mindful of how much sugar you are consuming and chose healthier options.  eg 70% or above Dark chocolate contains much less sugar and even has a higher protein content than confectionary bars. Try and get your sweet fix from natural source like fruit or raw honey which have a nutritional advantage too.  Also processed sugar has a negative effect on your immune system.  Something we definitely don’t want right now. 

Switch off your devices in the evening  do you find that your struggle to sleep, wake up feeling tired and un-rested? It may be that the EMF (electro magnetic frequency) of your lighting and devices is interfering with your sleep.  Our bodies need darkness to stimulate melatonin needed for sleep.  When we fall asleep with TV, laptops, phones and lighting still on the electro magnetic frequency causes us to release stress hormones cortisol which interferes with the quality of our sleep.  It also stops our bodies doing their jobs and fully repairing us as we sleep.  Turn off your devices, lower the lighting and relax before bed to get the most out of your 8 hours.

Sleep more – most of us generally don’t sleep enough and the benefits of sleep are endless.  All your bodies systems regenerate during sleep, including your immune system.  Getting a good nights sleep is also essential if you are trying to stay in shape.  What better way to spend time than to catch up on those extra zzzz’s Try just getting to bed an hour earlier to reap the benefits.

Plan your food shop  Ever went food shopping hungry and come out the supermarket with no actual meals but a lot of treats?  It’s easy done!  If you want to successfully eat well over lockdown it’s essential to plan your meals.  Choose some new recipes and then go to the supermarket intentionally to get those ingredients.  Get in and out avoiding the biscuit aisle and you’re on to a winner. After all who really wants to spend any longer than necessary in supermarket at the moment anyway. 

Laugh – research shows that laughter is good for the immune system and of course promotes positive mental health.  Again get intentional with it.  Start your day with your favourite comedy podcast, watch re-runs of all your old fav funny movies.  Get those laughter endorphins flowing to get yourself in the best mindset to stay positive through this strange time.

Why online PT is working for me

Even as a trainer myself, consistency is something I’ve always struggled when exercising.  When I’m feeling motivated it’s easy.  I will quite happily plan my own workouts.  But it’s the days where I feel tired, where life’s got in the way, where I’ve prioritised business, clients, family….and have no energy left for myself.  On those days it’s too easy to say fuck it I’ll train tomorrow.  And all too often tomorrow is exactly the same and before I know it it’s been a week since my last workout. 

I’ve always enjoyed working 1-1 with a trainer.  I love just being able to switch off my brain and hand the controls over to someone else.  I love the connection too. Sometimes it’s just someone else checking in on you and asking how you are makes such a difference.  And being accountable to someone else really works for me.  Even when I’m tired and not feeling it, if I’ve booked someone else’s time I will show up whether I want to or not.  Now as a new mum I have even more pressures on my time so prioritising myself is harder than ever. 

I wasn’t sure about online training to start with.  To be honest I didn’t think it would have the same effect.  But I’ve been pleasantly surprised.  And let’s face it right now we don’t exactly have other options.  

For the past 3 weeks I’ve been doing online PT sessions with Chloe Montgomery 

It has been exactly what I needed right now.  I feel fitter, healthier and stronger and also just pretty damn good about myself myself as I’ve religiously stuck to my 3 sessions a week.  I’ve also had a tailored approach to help my post natal body regain strength.  As well as being a boxer, Chloe is a certified S&C coach and keeps a watchful eye on my form during our sessions.  As a new mum I’ve definetly benefited from taking things down a notch and working on some basic functional movement to regain my core strength (something I struggle to do on my own as I lack patience and rush straight to HIT training) 

So all in all I’ve found it to be a massive help in both my physical and mental health over this crazy time.  If you are struggling to get into a consistent exercise routine, find that you cheat yourself a little joining insta live sessions (let’s face it, who works to their max when no one can see you?)

Taking a back seat……

Sitting in my front row VIP seat watching the fights on Sun night, I couldn’t help but feel a bit useless.

I’m used to being at the front of all the action.

Over the last few years I’ve gone from fighter to coach to overseeing the team.

Now at 8 months pregnant, I’m forced to take a step back and let the 12 Rounds Team run the show.

And what a show they put on.

I could not be more proud.  It’s not easy for any business owner to trust others with your baby.  I am so lucky to have an exceptional, loyal and hardworking team that believe in my business just as much as I do.

The DKM Sunday evening White Collar Show was dominated by 12 Rounds fighters.    Everyone of them demonstrated superb skill and composure under pressure. The results speak for themselves.

I believe that it all comes back to the leadership and dedication of the coaches.

There are a lot of White Collar programmes out there.  Some of them even let you train for free.

I truly believe that ours is far superior in terms of the experience you get.

Signing up for something like this is not something you take lightly.  It’s a huge commitment.  10 weeks of hard, focussed training.  Putting yourself in completely unknown territory.  You will most likely experience fear, doubt and exhaustion.

Why would anyone do this to themselves you might ask?

Well coming out the other end you will be a changed person.  The self growth, confidence and sense of achievement you will experience are second to none.  If you can handle this, you can do pretty much anything.

Join our Open Day for World Mental Health Day

At 12 Rounds Boxing, we’re a small boxing gym with big dreams of showing everyone how boxing can make us all better at dealing with life’s inevitable punches.
Our #BoxingMakesYouBetter Campaign launches on World Mental Health Day (10th October 2019) and encourages people to share their experiences of what boxing has done for them.

Our aim is to encourage more people (especially those who would never normally consider it) to find a club and give it a go.

To help you get involved and try us out we are holding an OPEN EVENING on Thursday 10th October from 6-9pm

6pm-6.45pm – Come along and meet the team and hear our member stories of how boxing has helped them cope with different life situations.

7pm-8.30pm – Join a beginner level boxing session and experience for yourself how a boxing session will boost your mood instantly. The session is suitable for both new and experienced boxers and will finish with a cool down and short talk on mindset strategies to boost mental well-being.

8.30pm-9pm – Join us in the bar for smoothies and win prizes in our raffle to raise money for The Frank Bruno Foundation, a charity that provides boxing sessions for people experiencing mental illness.

Since I started my fitness journey in my late 20s I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a 1-1 trainer.

My first trainer I saw 2 x a week where we’d go through a pretty standard routine of weights and cardio.

I remember being slightly surprised that within 3 months I’d lost weight and I was fitting into old clothes that had become too tight.

The training also helped me through a difficult time when I was quite low and isolated. Having regular training times helped give me some structure and sometimes just the connection with a supportive person made all the different to my day.

Since then I’ve had some fantastic trainers and swear by 1-1 training.

I enjoy having the focus and attention of the trainer, not having to think about a training plan and being pushed outside my comfort zone.

Left to my own devices I can be pretty lazy and will def not push myself to my max. Having a PT has enabled me to progress my fitness and boxing skills far more than I ever would have with group training.

Here are 7 reasons I believe this is the most effective approach

1. Consistency – when you’ve paid for something there’s an extra incentive to turn up. Personal training is a considerable expense and no one likes to waste money. You book your sessions and you turn up, even when you feel tired and not up for it. Getting your training in consistently is what leads to results.

2. Time management – have you ever gone to the gym by yourself spend half an hour wandering around wondering what to do then another hour doing a half hearted session, most of it resting between sets? I have . It’s pretty frustrating wasting your time like that but it’s not easy to motivate yourself sometimes. Even as a trainer myself I sometimes find it difficult. Having a personal trainer completely takes away any time wastage. Your trainer will plan your session and ensure you work for the hour. You will always leave knowing you’re achieved something.

3. Enjoyment – For me personally, it’s much more enjoyable to train with company. I think this is down to individual personality but for me I’m not a fan of working out alone. It’s much more enjoyably with a trainer to have some chat and connection while getting through the reps.

4. Effort – if you’re a people pleaser like me then you will want to please your trainer and will put in maximum effort. I don’t know anyone who does not work to their max with a trainer standing over them encouraging them. Working on your own or in a group you can get away with working in your comfort zone. With a personal trainer there’s nowhere to hide.

5. Support – working with a personal trainer is a special relationship. 9 x out of 10 that trainer will also become your therapist, your confidante and your friend. They know how to motivate you and encourage you every step of the way.

6. Flexibility – busy lifestyles mean we can’t always commit to attending classes at set times. The beauty of personal training is that you can organise your training around times to suit you. Whether that’s 6am in the morning or 8pm the evening to fit in with your schedule.

7. Expertise and accountability – a personal trainer is an expert in all aspects of fitness (trainers at 12 Rounds are also boxing experts) This means your training is tailored around your goals strengths and weaknesses and instead of an overall group approach. Whether you want to improve technique or boost your fitness or strength, the 1-1 attention and focus means you improve much faster.

The end of summer always makes me a bit sad.

The cool air in the morning and the daylight hours getting shorter…… I think it reminds me of going back to school and trust me I was never excited about that. I never wanted the freedom of summer to come to an end. Did anyone else really hate all those ‘back to school’ adverts that used to start in July?

I still get that slight dread at this time of year that It’s back to the grind time.

What I do like about September though is the return of structure.

I love having a regular routine. I like setting goals and having a focus. I feel better about myself when I have a consistent exercise and work regime. Not easy to do over the summer months with holidays, weddings and all the other social events.

So even if it’s a bit sad that the frivolity and freedom has come to an end, I find that getting back into a routine is something to look forward to.

Routine is so important in creating good habits. Imagine you could condition yourself to workout the same way you brush your teeth? You don’t have to think about it, you just do it. I’m not saying it’s easy but you CAN do this. And once achieved you get not only the physical benefits of looking your best, but you feel really good about yourself too – as you’ve stuck to what you said you would do.
