A Story of Courage and Commitment

Transforming your body is not really the main goal of fight skool

But when you’ve got a goal bigger that yourself it’s amazing what can happen

Stepping into the ring and showcasing your skills in front of hundreds of people is amazing motivation to get into your best shape ever as Neil McCann discovered

Neil had been training with us for about 9 months when the coaches noticed his skill and determination and suggested he go for a fight

Never being one to shy away from a challenge Neil jumped at the chance and fully committed himself to the 10 week programme

He trained hard,4 x a week, only missing 2 sessions over the 10 week period

And he stopped drinking and gave the programme his full attention

Over the 10 weeks Neil progressed massively in terms of fitness and skill and showed true courage and determination in fighting a tough and more experienced opponent

And he lost an amazing 15kg in the process

So how did he do it?

Simple he gave it his all and committed himself fully to the programme

He didn’t make excuses or shy away from tough sessions

Something I’ve learned from boxing is that you can teach anyone the skill but to be a real fighter requires heart and determination

There are day that are going to be tough. There are day where you want to quit but it’s about that willingness to still show up on those days and get through the rounds that really make a true fighter

I asked Neil at the end of the programme what he’d learned about himself during the process

‘the biggest thing I learned about myself is I can achieve anything I put my mind to and focus on’

Now that’s got to give you a massive confidence boost!

Why everyone should learn to box…..

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve written a blog, you could say things have been a bit busy. I’ve started training for fight for in July and right now I’m out in Spain on retreat helping my client find clarity and a plan to create her ideal business and life
And that in-between boxing

I want to start by telling you a bit about my fight training, how it’s completely rekindled my love for boxing. A month ago I decided I was going to get back in the ring. It’s been 4 years since my last fight. For a while I just didn’t have the energy or focus to put into my own training. Now with our new fight skool programme just starting, it seemed like the right time

Kat and MarkTo get my training started I re-connected with my old boxing coach. With any coaching whether it’s in sport or business I think it’s so important to find someone that you completely connect with. For me Mark is the only coach who can push me to my limits and at the same time keep me motivated. Over the last few weeks we’ve had so much fun as he’s kicked my ass around the ring again

Here are a few things about boxing I’ve been reminded of over the last few weeks

Always learning
In boxing you never stop learning. Not only do I have my own coach but I’m super lucky that I have a team of pro fighters and expert boxing coaches that I learn from everyday. After almost 10 years I’m still learning how to position my feet and set up angles to sharpen my jab and generate power from my cross
Team bond
Training with a group working to the same goal is something really special. The support and connection in our training group is unbelievable. I’m so proud of the team and the coaches for how much they go out of there way to help one another and make sure everyone feels supported. And there’s the competitive element that makes you work just that little bit harder.  You don’t want to be the one to quit.  This is what got me through the hill sprints (my least fav thing) a few weeks ago! sprints

Progression

Abs picAfter just 2 weeks of training I’m seeing my body and fitness level start to change. My abs which had been buried under a layer of fat have been starting to make a come back.  Because I know I ‘have’ to make weight my diet has improved. I’m more conscious of being prepared with my meals and making sure I’m eating enough protein and carbs to support my body. My fitness is def starting to improve to. Consistency equals results. Knowing that you’ve got to be able to survive 3 rounds in the ring is a sure fire way to make sure I make every session

Focus
Focusing my mind is something I’ve always struggled with. Working on my boxing skills is like a form of meditation for me. It forces me to concentrate, brings me back to the present and actually calms me down. If you have a very ‘active’ racy mind and find the thought of yoga or meditation terrifying, boxing is a great alternative

Confidence
Knowing you are strong in body and can throw a punch and take a punch is pretty powerful. It’s no wonder that boxing is renowned for building confidence.  Knowing that I am fitter and making progress all the time def helps me feel stronger and more confident mentally

Fighting is not for everyone but I think that getting learning to box should be.  Simply joining the training will give you all of the above
If you want to start your boxing journey, we still have spaces in our June Fundamentals course starting Mon 12th June

Are the stories you tell yourself keeping you fat?

Most of you probably think at 12 Rounds were all about hard training and restrictive diets but here’s a few thoughts I’ve been sharing with my clients recently.

Since entering the fitness industry I’ve changed my views so much on what’s important and what gets results. Most of us who want to lose weight want to do so because we want to be happy right? We’ve been told from the experts to train more and eat less. Yet for some us us it doesn’t matter how hard we train or how much we restrict out diets those numbers on the scales don’t move. And instead if moving towards our goal of happiness we end up miserable in the process. Frustrated and sad that we can’t achieve what we set out to. We tell ourselves stories that it must be something about us, we’re lazy, not working hard enough, have no will power or are greedy….

But what if it was these stories that was keeping us fat?

I get you, because I’ve told myself those stories too. Even as a personal trainer I always struggled with my weight. I had a picture in my head of how I thought a trainer should look like. I thought if I looked like a fitness model, if I had a six pack and below 15% body fat then I’d be more confident, I’d have more clients and my business would be more successful, ultimately I’d be happier. That was my story. So I really pushed myself to train hard, I consulted nutritionists and tried different diet plans. I tried to follow the rules. At one point I ate virtually no carbs and almost passed out during one of my high intensity boxing sessions. But the measurements didn’t change, I fact some weeks I’d actually got bigger. Seeing those numbers not change was so demotivating. I felt like a complete failure. Why did it work for everyone else and not me?

I knew there had to be something else as this just wasn’t working for me or so many others.

Now I truly believe that the key lies not in how hard we train or how little we eat but in brain science and how much threat we are under.

Let me explain. The more we push ourselves to do things we don’t want to do the more we push our brain into threat. Our brain thinks we’re in some kind of danger and we revert to our reptile brain that’s only concern is survival. It’s often the stories we tell ourselves that place us under threat.

How much threat we are under has a direct effect on our stress levels.

Our stress levels then have a direct impact on our hormones.

Our hormones have a direct impact on our body’s ability to burn fat.

So how we feel is so much more important than what we eat or how much we train.

Makes a lot of sense right? If we are constantly making our selves miserable with behaviours that don’t serve us, then all we are doing is telling our brain we are under threat.

Think about how you feel every time you step on the scales and those numbers don’t move. Is this how you want to feel? So why put yourself in that position and makes yourself miserable everyday?

Instead of doing something that makes you miserable and focussing on your goal, reverse the cycle and start with how you want to feel. Learn to love the journey, not just the results.

Do something everyday that moves you towards happiness and the results will take care of themselves :)

Something to think about…..

Just breathe….

I'm a total stress head.
Some of you will already know this about me.
I actually stress about being stressed! Like many of us,
I find it really hard to slow down and relax. I hardly
ever switch off.
This means my sympathetic nervous system is in overdrive
making it harder to lose weight.
Now I know I'm not alone here. Most of you are probably
stressed out right? How did your day start today? you
rushed to get out the door for work, grabbed a coffee
on the way and opened your laptop to 50 new emails you
have no idea how to deal with.........or you maybe your
stressed out trying to get the kids out the door to
school. Ellie won't eat her breakfast, Ben doesn't want
to go to school. Your feeling knackered and it's only 9am.
So here's what I want you to do today.
Take 10 mins out, find somewhere quiet, sit down and just
BREATHE
That's it.
Allow yourself to do absolutely nothing for 10 mins.
No checking emails or Facebook (I'm going to
struggle with this one) and breathe properly,
from your diaphragm.
I know some of you won't even know how to do this as
most of us breathe from our chest which actually makes
us more wired! Push your rib age down as you breathe in
until you can see your stomach pushed out.
If your like me and the thoughts will still be racing
through your head. Try and just observe them and let
them go. Don't try to resist. Just 10 mins meditation
can really help your energy levels.
Now that was easy, wasn't it?
Ok now here's the funny story.
I have no idea what I'm going to write to you for the
next 30 days!
But I figure that adding one new good habit a day will
actually have a big impact on your overall health.
AND I've make a commitment to email though so you must
keep me accountable. If I can write an email everyday,
you can manage one small change right?
If I fail to send an email for the next 30 days, the
fine is 30 burpees in class or you can decide the
exercise.....
Until tomorrow....
Kat (I'm making it up as I go along) Bryson

Over-indulged this summer? Time to get back to fitness!

Lets been honest, how many of us haven’t over-indulged on holiday?  I left for Portugal last week with the good intentions of training everyday and cooking healthy lunches from our holiday apartment.  I did manage to stick to a training plan (if only to feel less guilty about the chips, ice-cream and alcohol I had consumed!  Yes, the diet did not go quite to plan.  One slip up led to another until I gave up completely and let myself go, thankfully it was only a week!

So Mon 3rd of September and it’s time to get back on track with the diet and exercise.  Here’s a few tips to help you get started!

  1.  Make yourself an exercise plan!  Whether it’s coming to classes or fitting in runs or exercise at home.  Set aside time to exercise and put it in your diary.
  2. Don’t overdo it on the first week!  Don’t attempt to train everyday and make sure you get adequate rest in between sessions.  Rest and recovery are just as important as training!
  3. Detox – start by cutting out the obvious culprits, processed food, sugar, wheat and alcohol.  After a few days you’ll feel better already as you’ll be less bloated.
  4. Drink water!  No less than 2 litres per day.
  5. Plan your meals for the week and go food shopping.  Don’t get caught out unprepared and hungry and this is the surest way to slip up.
  6. Don’t beat yourself up if you have put on a few pounds!  Holidays are for allowing yourself a few indulgences!   Just don’t let it continue now your back. Set yourself a realistic goal and timeframe to get back to the weight your happy with.  With a little bit of controlled eating and hard work we’ll all be looking fab again just in time for the Christmas parties!

Look forward to seeing you all at class!
