Boxing Fundamentals Course

Course Overview

Our Boxing Fundamentals course is a 12 session course where beginners can learn the foundations in a group setting with other beginners.  Over the 12 sessions you will build fitness and learn techniques from the ground up.  By the end of the course you’ll be competent in basic techniques and CONFIDENT to join our more advanced classes.

We recommend you attend 3 x a week and complete the course in 4 weeks however we understand that level of attendance might not be possible for everyone.  If 3 x a week is a bit intense, you can attend 1-2 x a week and complete over 8 weeks.

FAQs

Each session is 50 mins long. Classes start with warm up and mobility and then move on to technique which you practice on pads/bags. Each session then concludes with fitness drills circuit training and an all over stretch.

Most people find that boxing is a sport where you can work around most injuries. Our coaches are professionals and as long as you let them know about your injury at the start of the session they can give you alternative exercises to work around any injuries.

No. Technique is generally practised in pairs with pads and gloves however you should not feel nervous about attending on your own. Our coaches strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment and will partner up the class accordingly. Expect to have fun and meet new friends!

We provide you with your own set of handwraps when you join the course. You will need to purchase your own boxing gloves (We can lend you some for a few sessions but we do recommend you get your own) For women we advise buying 14 oz gloves and for men 16 oz gloves. You can buy from online boxing retailers (we use Geezers Boxing) or you can find more budget priced gloves in Decathlon or Sports Direct. These are absolutely fine for starting out.

Other than that you just need comfortable gym clothes, trainers and bring along some water.

We allow 8 weeks in total for you to get your 12 sessions in. We do not carry sessions over past the course end, however if you are struggling to make the Fundamentals class times work for you, we will do our best to accommodate you in another class (eg bag and burn)

Weight loss, increased agility and coordination, muscle tone and greater fitness all result from boxing. Many people think that boxing is all about the arms but it is actually a cardio work-out for the whole body. There’s no need to worry about bulking up. Boxing is very much a high repetition work-out so you’ll see tone rather than muscle growth. Mentally, boxing is very empowering. Everyone who attends the course reports increased self confidence. It’s also possibly the best stress management tool ever. We are incredibly passionate about promoting the mental benefits of boxing and many of our members report reduced stress and anxiety, more focus and mental clarity and improved sense of well-being from regular attendance.

Weak wrists are probably the only thing that might present a problem however once you learn how to box properly, you shouldn’t be putting any unnecessary strain on your wrists. The aim of your punches is also important. Align your punches correctly and your knuckles should feel no pain. Ensuring you wrap your hands well before the start of each class this will help prevent any injury to the wrist or hands.

There is absolutely no body-to-body contact allowed in boxing fundamentals, of course as with any sport, accidents do happen however the general risk of injury is minimal.

Most definitely! Everyone who trains with us religiously sees dramatic results. Some of our members have reported losing 10kg in just 4 weeks. The main thing is you will have a great time. Boxing is addictive :)

Absolutely. Our aim is to make boxing accessible to everyone. We believe that there should be no barriers. We’ve had members in their 70s training with us. Our instructors will work with you to take things at a pace you are comfortable with.

That’s ok – many of our members box simply for fitness and the feel good factor.  Boxing is one of the best workouts around and by far the most enjoyable.  Learning a skill makes training much more engaging and is a great tool to quieten a busy mind.  For those who want to progress we offer sparring and fight programmes.

We don’t offer drop in for Fundamentals.  To progress both technique and fitness requires regular attendance.   If you require more flexibility – see our PT page.
